Mantralaya is the administrative headquarters of the state government of Maharashtra in South Mumbai, built in 1955. Mantralaya was earlier known as Sachivalaya. Most state governments in India headquarters’ are known as Secretariats.
Mantralaya wanted to revamp the existing campus networking infrastructure and thus had floated an RFP for selection of partners to upgrade their campus LAN infrastructure, where the revamp for top 3 floors was on priority basis as floors were isolated due to a major fire break-out.

The IT infrastructure from leading OEM (Juniper Networks INC.) was proposed to the team of Mantralaya to build state of art Campus LAN Solution. The solution was high performing as per the next generation technology and scalable as the business grows. This solution catered to the critical resilient applications.
The data center was located in the New Administrative Building which is opposite to Mantralaya which also hosted the State Data Center. The core switch was placed in NAB and on the backend connected with SDC. Like many Layer 2 networks, the legacy switches relied on Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) for network resiliency when link failed. But the inherent inefficiencies of STP increased operational overhead and reduced network efficiency by blocking half of the redundant links. If a link failed, STP was slow to determine the network path, which made the network unreliable. Ultimately, the use of STP made it more difficult to deal with the huge spikes in traffic that occurred when mailed.
Mantralaya’s expectations and requirements were met by the EX product line of switches, which provided option for 1Gbps, 10 Gbps or even 40Gbps interfaces.1. Most departments have one EX Series Ethernet Switch, but as performance needs grow, Mantralaya can easily grow incrementally and also take advantage of Virtual Chassis technology to interconnect up to 10 EX4200 / EX3300 switches and upto two EX8200 switches and manage them as a single, logical device —delivering the reliability, scalability and manageability of traditional chassis-based systems. The EX Series Ethernet Switches are carrier class networking solutions that leverage a common version of Junos software, ensuring consistency and accelerating the learning curve. The EX Series switches feature Juniper Networks virtual chassis technology, which allows up to 10 of the switches to be interconnected and operate as a single, logical system. With virtual chassis technology, users get the reliability, manageability, and high-port densities of traditional chassis-based systems in a cost-effective, compact form factor. Optional front panel 10-Gigabit Ethernet uplink modules provide high-speed connectivity to upstream devices such as routers.
The access layer of the network is made up of the Juniper networks EX3300 Ethernet Switches in 24+4 1 / 10 GbE configurations in Virtual Chassis. Each EX3300 employs two 1GbE uplink pairs, which are connected to separate EX4200 switches for redundancy. Each EX4200, in turn is connected to EX4500 switches which are on distribution layer over a bundled pair of 10GbE links, giving the Virtual Chassis configuration up to 20 Gbps of total uplink capacity and those distribution switches on the backend connects to EX8200 switches again in Virtual chassis on 10Gbps uplink.
The key management systems of operations for various departments was provided with scalable state of art switching infrastructure which can scale as the business grows and reduce the capital and operational expenditure to deliver the expectations for the requirements today and in future.
